Art and film meet again during the second edition of Kunstkerk Kino. In cooperation with our opposite neighbors from Stadsbrasserie and Filmtheater De Witt, we present a special film selection by artist Job Smeets on June 6, following his exhibition Dust To Dust in the Kunstkerk.
Job chose: Der Himmel über Berlin (1987) by Wim Wenders, a poetic and philosophical film about angels observing the lives of Berliners, longing for human experiences. It is therefore no coincidence that precisely this film inspires Job: his work balances between heaven and earth, between transience and eternity, and between the mythical and the everyday world.
A unique evening in which visual art and film reinforce each other. Before the screening, Job himself will be present for a short introduction about his choice and what this film means to him.
ABOUTTHE FILM
Damiel (Bruno Ganz) is an angel who, together with Cassiel (Otto Sander), floats invisibly above Berlin, listening to the thoughts of those below. He tries to offer comfort to those who are lonely or sad. But after centuries as an angel, he longs to become human - to feel, taste and love. When he meets a circus acrobat, his desire becomes irreversible. With stunning images of Berlin before the fall of The Wall, Wim Wenders (known for Paris, Texas and Der Amerikanische Freund) tells a philosophical and poetic story about presence, desire and the essence of being human. The screenplay was co-written by author Peter Handke. The film was awarded the director's prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
