On March 14, the first edition of Kunstkerk Kino will take place, in collaboration with our opposite neighbors at Stadsbrasserie and Filmtheater De Witt. For this occasion, top photographer Ruud Baan presents - in honor of his exhibition "Bewogen tijd, 25 jaar fotografie" - one of his favorite films: RIZE (2005) by David LaChapelle. Ruud Baan's photography is all about movement - captured in color, dynamics and contrast. It is therefore no surprise that precisely this documentary inspires him.
ABOUTTHE FILM
RIZE is an energetic and probing portrait of young people in America's inner cities. Director and fashion photographer David LaChapelle delves into the world of krumping - an explosive dance style that combines elements of combat, clown-mime and African tribal dance. The film follows former drug dealer Tommy Johnson, who creates the alter ego Tommy the Clown after the Rodney King riots in 1992. What begins as a local dance movement grows into a powerful community in which expression and creativity provide an alternative to street life.
With his signature eye for color and rhythm, LaChapelle brings this subculture to life. RIZE is more than a dance documentary: it is a story about perseverance, identity and the power of art as an outlet.
