What does it mean to leave everything behind, and how do you start over? Five talented artists with refugee backgrounds provide impressive answers to these questions in the exhibition Galatea Art Prize 2025. Artists with refugee backgrounds.
Each artwork tells a personal story - About a childhood past, joy, sorrow and resistance. About difficult times and the strength to keep going. In five accompanying video portraits, the artists tell more about their, background, experiences and sources of inspiration.
You'll see a mix of disciplines. From colorful paintings to visionary photography and video art. But also: a recreated cabinet wall as a haunted dollhouse. And a piano completely decorated with painted toothpicks - material that happened to be available near an AZC. The selected artists are:

About the Galatea Art Prize
The Galatea Prize is an initiative of the Galatea Foundation and supports refugee artists in building their artistic practice in the Netherlands. Every two years, talented artists are selected for a group exhibition at the Dordrecht Museum. Halfway through the exhibition, a professional jury chooses the winner, who receives the Galatea Penning and a cash prize of €2,500. After the successful edition in 2023, this incentive award will return.
