On May 5, 2025, we not only celebrate freedom, but also commemorate 80 years of liberation. It is a day that takes us back to a moment in history that changed the world. This year, Liberation Day is a national holiday and we invite everyone to experience this special day together in Dordrecht, at the place where freedom was regained.

An Impressive Commemoration

The day begins at 10 a.m. with an impressive commemoration at the War & Liberation Monument "The Tree of Life" in Merwestein Park. Designed by Hans Petri, the monument is a symbol of the strength and perseverance of those who fought for our freedom.

Around the monument will be placed the flagpoles of the countries that liberated the Netherlands: Canada, America, Poland, England and the Netherlands. The moment the flags are raised symbolizes the unity and cooperation that led to the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945. As the flags rise into the air, Jubal plays the first notes of this solemn ceremony, creating an atmosphere of respect and reflection.

Yellow Riders and the Liberation Fire

But the commemoration has more impressive elements. The Corps Riding Artillery (KRA), the Royal Army's famous Yellow Riders, makes an impressive entry on horseback. The riders in their distinctive military dress carry history with them as they ride into the park and line up for the ceremony.

Afterwards, runners from Athletics Association Fortius will bring the Liberation Fire. This fire is symbolic of the liberation, collected from Wageningen, the city of the 1945 capitulation. The runners, who retrieved the fire from the night of May 4-5, will carry it with pride and reverence to the place of remembrance, where the flame will burn as a powerful symbol of freedom.

Speech and Ceremony

After the official opening by CCOD chairman Peter van der Leer, the Liberation Fire will be lit, and a moment of silence and reflection will begin. The Mayor of Dordrecht will then give a speech, emphasizing the significance of freedom in our time. It is a moment to reflect on how we cherish freedom, but also how we keep the memories alive for generations to come.

The ceremony concludes with two cannon shots, filling the air with a sound of reverence and respect.

A Moment of Connection

This moment of remembrance is an opportunity for togetherness and connection. It reminds us of the power of freedom. We invite everyone to join us in reflecting on this special occasion. It is a time to celebrate and cherish our freedom as we honor the memories of war and liberation.

We invite everyone to participate in this special commemoration. Let us remember, celebrate and cherish together that we may live in freedom.
