Phaedra in flames is a modern version of the classic love drama Phaedra. In her new adaptation, Nino Haratischwili - author of the monumental family epic The Eighth Life (for Brilka) - asks the question: how can you fight for your freedom as a woman in a man's world?
Phaedra, queen of Athens, is trapped in an unhappy marriage to her husband Theseus. Everything changes when she meets her soon-to-be daughter-in-law Persea. This young woman shakes up everything and everyone around her and recklessly kicks against the existing power structures. Phaedra becomes enchanted by Persea's fierce power. A secret, passionate relationship ensues, with disastrous consequences.
Director Ola Mafaalani returns to the big screen for the first time since the theatrical hit Borgen (2016). Tamar van den Dop performs the role of Phaedra and Yela de Koning plays her lover Persea. Composer Krists Auznieks wrote new music, which will be performed live by four musicians from the New European Ensemble.
