Evening excursion led by an expert guide from nature organization IVN. Theme: swifts.
Houses, office buildings, churches and other human structures are like a rocky landscape full of cavities for swifts to nest in. Old buildings, often in downtown cities, are especially popular. Much of their life is spent in the air. During the breeding season, they sit on their nests. All food is caught in the air, they specialize in catching insects in full flight. To do this, they usually look for the air layers that contain the most insects at that time, and that can be quite a high altitude. Their food consists of flying insects, such as mosquitoes, flies and moths. For their young, they collect up to several hundred insects at a time in a food ball, which is then fed to the young.
There is, of course, much more to tell about the swift, so join us! Gathering will be at Scheffers Square near the statue of Ary Scheffer.
