There are about 350 species of bees in the Netherlands, the best known of which is the honey bee. This is a bit of a peculiar case, as it does not or hardly occurs in the wild in the Netherlands. The honey bee is kept in hives by beekeepers and therefore cannot really be considered a wild species. We do consider the other bee species "wild" bees, because they are not cared for by humans. The stunning wealth of wild bees is new to many people.
Pieter van Breugel has been studying these animals for years and is the Dutch expert on insect hotels and the author of the book "Guests of Bee hotels." He also wrote the Basic Guide to Wild Bees. Tonight he will take you into the life of the wild bee.
