Lecture by Marianne Eekhout.
Jan Steen's "household" is still a Dutch expression that expresses how chaotic and disorganized households could be in the seventeenth century. How different this was with the De Witt regent family! In this Dordrecht family, cleanliness, regularity and tranquility, as well as status and quality, were paramount. When Johan was an adult, he married Wendela Bicker from Amsterdam, who took charge of the furnishings and household of his residence. She keeps detailed lists of what she buys, gets and displays in their Hague home.
In this lecture, curator and exhibition maker Marianne Eekhout takes you into the living world of Johan de Witt's home. How was the house furnished? What did Johan do when he was at home, what were his hobbies? What staff did Johan and Wendela employ? How was his household organized? And what does this tell us about the seventeenth century?
