Dear owner of this house. The works in this exhibition began with an envelope with this text. Sent to an address found on Funda, or put through the mail at an intriguing home.
Jouk Oosterhof has a fascination with untold histories hidden in old furniture and behind faded curtains. Like a sculptor, she brings together the personal story of her models and the mystery of found interiors in a startling image that Gijs Groenteman describes as "a Jouk-like world that is slightly more surreal than the world we all live in."
Jouk graduated from the KABK in The Hague in 1998. She developed into a much sought-after photographer with an unmistakable style of her own within and outside the Netherlands. She has received international nominations and awards such as the Taylor Wessing Portrait prize (National Portrait Gallery, London), the Head On (Sydney) and the Rabo Photographic Portrait Prize.
Jouk Oosterhof's approach is precise and considered. Colors and frame, pose and clothing, light and lines. Each photograph is the result of a careful search for one image in which the stories of the space, the subject, and the photographer together transcend the ordinary.
