On Saturday, November 29, 2025, renowned trombonist Jörgen van Rijen will perform with the Dordrecht Philharmonic Orchestra. It will be a festive concert to mark the 100th anniversary of the association.
The evening will be a special reunion, as Jörgen van Rijen himself started in the Phil's youth orchestra at the age of eight. Van Rijen is a solo trombonist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and is considered one of the best trombonists in the world. The Phil is therefore very proud of this joint performance.
The melodic and virtuosic sides of the trombone can be heard well in (among others) the famous trombone concerto (1924) by Danish composer Launy Grǿndahl. The orchestra also plays the Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story (1960). This piece tells the story of this successful musical set in Manhattan's Upper West Side. It centers on the impossible love between Tony and Maria, affiliated with the rival street gangs the Jets and the Sharks.
The hall is open from 7:30 p.m.
Ticket price is €17.50 (including intermission drink) when purchased before Oct. 1, then €20.00.
