What happens when two inspired musicians commit themselves to the lesser-known repertoire? Then magic happens ... and a special concert program full of musical discoveries.
Viola player Karin Dolman and pianist Lauretta Bloomer have been searching together for six months for pieces that have rarely (or never) been recorded. Not just out of curiosity, but with a mission: to broaden and enrich the viola repertoire. The works are played, discussed and reviewed for the international website Music4Viola.infoas a source of inspiration for new generations of viola players.
Retrieved from August 22 they will present a selection of these musical gems, including some hidden masterpieces and a few surprising gems that deserve a wider audience.
What's on the program?
Arnold Bax - Sonata for Viola and Piano
A grand sonata that has perhaps never before been performed in the Netherlands. Although it has already found its way into the final rounds of the renowned Lionel Tertis Viola Competition in England, this impressively composed and complex sonata remains underexposed in the concert hall. Time to change that.
William Lloyd Webber - Sonatina
Andrew Lloyd Webber's father wrote a sonata of only 8 minutes, but with enormous eloquence. When asked why he composed such a short work, he is said to have replied,"Tell your story with the words you need. Nothing more, nothing less." A small work with great impact.
Alan Rawsthorne - Sonata for Viola and Piano
A piece of which there are probably no recordings. The sonata opens with weight, but unfolds to a lighter, livelier conclusion. A work that deserves to be rediscovered.
Howard Ferguson - Four Short Pieces
Four characterful miniatures originally also written for clarinet, but beautifully displayed on viola. Each movement is a small world unto itself, rich in color and emotion.
Lauretta Bloomer and Karin Dolman are not only performing musicians - they are also pioneers. With their dedication to the unknown repertoire, they open doors to a musical world that few enter. A concert for lovers of chamber music, for curious ears and for anyone who wants to be surprised.
