1980s, Riparbella on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Everyone has their own Chimera, a dream or chimera they try to reach but can never find. The grave robbers of the Tombaroli gang hunt for easy wealth by excavating and trading Etruscan relics. They dream of riches and a comfortable existence. Briton Arthur(Josh o' Connor) joins them, trying to fill the void he feels since losing his great love Beniamina. Their field of work connects them to the underworld full of dead souls to which mysteries and legends attach. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead souls and between feasts and loneliness, the fates of all those seeking the Chimera turn out to be beautifully intertwined.
Alice Rorhwacher films noisy zest for life and infused heartbreak amid a sense that Italy had a rich civilization. Italian landscapes and mysterious locations provide an apt backdrop to this. And her film contains wonderful references to all sorts of movements and great directors from Italy's rich cinematic history.
