Musical journey from Berlin to Broadway, classical to jazz
In this surprising concert, listeners are transported to the music of Kurt Weill and his contemporaries, in a blend of classical, jazz and cabaret, from Berlin to Hollywood and Broadway, with lyricists such as Bertold Brecht, Ogden Nash and Maxwell Anderson. Featuring beloved classics such as "Alabama Song," "September Song," "Lost in the Stars" and Charlie Chaplin's nostalgic "Smile.
The composers of these songs came from turbulent times, when some of them had to flee persecution, and were forced to emigrate in search of a better life. This concert will include specially arranged pieces by Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Charlie Chaplin, Rezső Seress and Pablo Casals. The musical performance is in the hands of The Hague String Trio (Justyna Briefjes, Julia Dinerstein and Miriam Kirby), with singer Lucy Woodward, double bassist and arranger Marijn van Prooijen and drummer Vinsent Planjer. Directed by Annechien Koerselman, sound by Nina Kraszewska.
Lucy Woodward has previously worked with the likes of Rod Stewart, Snarky Puppy and performed with numerous international jazz ensembles. The Hague String Trio recently celebrated their 20th anniversary and is known for their layered ensemble playing and critically acclaimed CDs. Marijn van Prooijen and Vinsent Planjer add their rich background in classical, world music and jazz for a moving and virtuosic ensemble.
