Musical theater about the fickleness of those in power
'Mother of Europe' is about the fickleness of power and is set on the eve of the French Revolution. Things are brewing in Europe; between countries, between the elite and the people and between generations. Empress Maria Theresa wants to maintain her position at all costs. She orders her rebellious daughter Marie Antoinette - married to the French king - to have children in order to protect her dynasty. Meanwhile, the young talented violinist and composer Chevalier acquires fame within France's elite circles, but his revolutionary ideas are not rewarded. At court, Freemason Angelo Soliman works his way up as an adviser, but his position proves fragile. Maria Theresa and her ambitious party meet at a crucial point in time, with only one goal: to leave their indelible mark on what is to come.
Directed by Belle van Heerikhuizen, Manoushka Zeegelaar Breeveld, Selin Akkulak, Shahine El-Hamus and Michiel Blankwaardt dive deep into European history to rewrite it. With classical strings, explosive percussion and electronic sounds, the characters sing themselves free of time and place.
