On Wednesday afternoon, May 28 is the Sheep Shearing Festival at Weizigt. It will be a festive and educational afternoon dedicated to wool and sheep.
During the sheep shearing festival, the four Schoonebeeker moorland sheep of Stadsboerderij Weizigt will be sheared. The shearing is done by a professional shearer, who also explains the process. Shearing is important for the sheep. Animal keeper Theo explains: "if we don't shear the sheep the coat becomes too thick and heavy and they get too hot in the summer. Also, the sheep can suffer from skin diseases or parasites."
Shaving times are at: 1 pm, 1:45 pm, 2:30 pm and 3:15 pm.
Visitors can watch sheep shearing, but there are also a variety of activities that deal with sheep, sheep shearing and wool. On the grounds, you will be given a Doekaart, which lists all the activities. For example, get to work with felt, take a look at the spinning demonstration or craft a cute little sheep from cardboard, clothespins and wool.
Would you like to know why sheep live in flocks? Or why a sheep's coat feels greasy? At 2:15 and 3 p.m., Saskia will tell you all about sheep during the animal quarter.
Will you come too?
