Far from it: in a setting of centuries-old canals and stately facades, you will experience the exciting and surprising stories that took place in this city. Along the way you might just bump into a saint. Or a pirate!
Of course, water plays a big role in the stories. Dordrecht lies at the intersection of three rivers: the Old Meuse, the Lower Merwede and the North. All that water was good for trade and brought wealth to Dordrecht. The city was allowed to levy tolls on passing ships. And Dordrecht had the so-called stack right: it could oblige passing merchants to offer their goods first in the city.
So lots of trade, lots of money in circulation, lots of wealth. But the water also posed a threat. In November 1421, the Sint Elisabethflood put an end to prosperity. Dordrecht had become an island. Ships could literally bypass the tolls.
During the walk, you will meet "sheep heads," farmers, peat cutters, salt traders, Hoeken and Kabeljauwen. As rich in money as the city once was, it is still rich in legends and stories. Afterwards, you will never again say, "The closer you get to Dordt, the worse it gets. You will know better!
