On Sunday afternoon, May 11, Music Stage DJS is proud to present The Martinez Bros. a unique jazz formation led by brothers and saxophonists Juan and Miguel Martinez. Juan is artistic director of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Miguel is an internationally known bandleader. Since the 1980s these talented musicians have worked together in various ensembles, but with The Martinez Bros. they bring a refreshing blend of contemporary jazz, flamenco jazz and traditional Bulgarian music.
The band plays in a classic jazz quintet lineup in which gypsy rhythms from the Balkans, Spanish bulerías and tangos, and swing are effortlessly combined with sophisticated harmonic structures based on modal tonalities. This makes for an energetic, versatile and immersive musical experience.
The Martinez Bros. have made their mark at leading venues and festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzpodium DJS, Hot House Redbad and international festivals in Sofia, Pomporovo and Varna. Their concerts in 2007 and 2015 were even broadcast on Bulgarian national television.
The band consists of: Miguel Martinez - alto and soprano saxophone, Juan Martinez - baritone saxophone, Rob van Bavel - piano, Jeroen Vierdag - bass, Tim Hennekes - drums.
