From the party
In honor of the museum's 100th anniversary, Huis Van Gijn is bringing out a special fashion collection. From April 1 to October 26, visit the themed presentation of a century of party and fancy dress clothing in the unique setting of the historic interiors.
A historic fashion collection
Over the years, Huis Van Gijn has built up an extraordinary fashion collection of nearly 1,000 pieces, some of which are also accessible through the platform ModeMuze. Most have been donated to the museum by Dordrecht residents over the past century. As a result, the provenance and even the wearer/wearer is often known.
Where is that party?
The Dordt collection includes a wide selection of women's, men's and children's clothing. In addition to everyday items such as bed socks and underwear, there are also many beautiful gowns and formal suits. Especially for this themed presentation, the most beautiful pieces of party wear are on display. Each room has a different theme to suit the anniversary year. From weddings and nights out to royal visits. So you can see the difference between a wedding dress from the 18th and one from the early 20th century. Moreover, objects related to the theme are also on display, such as menus, commemorative glasses and invitations.
Disguises of the past
In the 19th century, dressing up was also very popular among different walks of life. Both children and adults took part in this, at parties but also in groups such as societies. Sometimes a painting-like setting was depicted; this is called a "tableau vivant"-a living painting. In his student days, Simon van Gijn even designed his own costume! For a student masquerade he dressed up in a historic suit, which is also on display in the themed presentation. Eyecatcher of the exhibition can be found in the Hall, where as a visitor you are greeted by a procession of cheerfully dressed children.
Fashion Party/Party Fashion
Put it in your calendar: on Saturday, May 24, a special fashion event will take place at 'Van de partij!'. With a special ticket you can follow an extra program under the name Fashion Party/Fashion. You will get an introduction to the exhibition followed by a fashion show/presentation in which the development in party fashion around 1900 will be explored. In addition, that day you will have the unique opportunity to view objects from the fashion collection up close. Our staff will retrieve a special selection from the depot of glamorous accessories and meticulous handiwork.
Please note ! The museum is closed on Mondays.
