Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland and has a long history. The city was first mentioned by name in a text from the twelfth century, when the settlement was still referred to as Thuredrech. Even before 1200, Dordrecht received city rights, which were supplemented in 1205 and expanded with important articles by Count William I in 1220. From that time on, the city developed as an important trading town and staple city and was one of the six major cities of Holland.
