When Maartje announces she is dying, panic breaks out. A comedy about saying goodbye, moving on and all the things we dare not say.
New Dutch comedy by Pieter Kramer and Don Duyns
"What to do with Maartje?" is a new Dutch comedy by Pieter Kramer and Don Duyns. A throwback to theater icons Jacqueline Blom, Mark Rietman, Annick Boer and Dick van den Toorn, who shine in this absurd and humorous performance as four friends struggling with a universal question: how do you say goodbye?
When actress Maartje announces that she is dying, but "absolutely does not want to talk about it," panic breaks out. Her decision to play on until her last breath not only shakes the theater company, but also the friendship of many years. Directed by Pieter Kramer, a whirlwind sequence of hilarious rehearsals, dressing room revelations and moving confrontations ensues. Meanwhile, no one talks about what is really going on. What to do with Maartje' zooms in on our denial of the inevitable end, our awkwardness in talking about death, the painful silences, the inappropriate jokes, the fear of losing someone and the need of those left behind to 'just' carry on.
