Social life came to a brief standstill; there were no large dinners or formal visits. People went on long vacations, traveling by train, steamship, or horse-and-carriage. Simon van Gijn kept detailed accounts of the trips he took with his wife Cornelia and with friends. And they took an extensive wardrobe with them.
You can also see signs of summer in the museum house: fresh ingredients for a crisp salad are laid out in the kitchen, and the dining table is set with desserts made with summer fruit. When the residents are away on a trip, the house is locked up. White sheets protect the furniture from dust while they’re gone, since such a trip could last as long as 5 to 6 weeks.
You can find out where they went in the picture drawers. On the second floor, there’s a chest of drawers with themed drawers. Among other things, you’ll find Simon’s travelogues, souvenirs, and summer photos of Dordrecht from days gone by.
