Ugly heritage walk
Especially for the Open Monumentendagen 2023, the Vakteam Erfgoed of Gemeente Dordrecht organizes a free guided tour along 'ugly heritage' on Saturday, September 9. The walk starts at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. in front of the entrance to the City Office at Spuiboulevard 300. The registration form can be found at the bottom of this page.
The "modern" architecture between 1965 to 1990 often raises the question of how we could ever have built something like this. Although these buildings may not be wonderfully beautiful, future heritage can also be recognized in them. Join a guided tour by Vakteam Erfgoed Gemeente Dordrecht and experience a very different kind of heritage!
Ugly heritage
Architecture built between 1965 and 1990 represents an era of vibrant creativity and innovation. This period also left an important mark on the city's architecture in Dordrecht. Although not always appreciated, it embodies the spirit of change and progress. From brutalist concrete structures reflecting the search for functionality and honesty in materials, to anthroposophic architecture where the expression of life had to be captured in architecture.
Post '65 in Dordrecht
Above all, architecture from this period reminds us that buildings are more than just physical structures. They reflect the values, dreams and aspirations of a society. They serve as witnesses to the urban renewal and urban expansion that helped shape Dordrecht. Architecture from this period deserves appreciation because it not only connects us to history, but also continues to inspire us to push boundaries of creativity and functionality.
