Dordrecht does not have many historical, recognisable defence works. However, there is a very striking bunker structure on the island of Dordrecht. The bunker near the Rijksstraatweg (type 502) was built in 1942, has a wall thickness of two metres reinforced concrete and was intended to house twenty soldiers. During the Second World War, the bunker was part of the Moerdijk support base. The support point, consisting of several bunkers, played an important role in the defence of the Moerdijk bridges. The interior of the bunker has been completely restored and contains a lot of equipment used at that time, such as air purification, periscope, telephones and radios. A unique feature of this bunker is that a structure for anti-aircraft artillery was built, in which a German flak cannon stood. The bunker recently came under the management of Bunker Preservation Dordrecht.
