The Wilhelmina Foundation was built between 1927 and 1930 on the initiative of the Dordrecht couple L.C. van Oldenborgh-Vriesendorp. The courtyard with 33 houses is grouped in such a way that the residents can enjoy sunlight for most of the day.

The female figure on the outside of the gate, made by the Haarlem sculptor Van den Eijnde, carries the symbols of house and home on her hands. On the court side, the coat of arms of the foundation can be seen, as well as female figures representing morning and evening.

The houses of the Wilhelmina Foundation are all the same size and are connected by stairs to the attic. In the founding deed, the aim was described as follows: "to provide free housing for the elderly, belonging to a Protestant denomination, of the female sex, from the working class or small trades".

In the course of time, the statutes have changed: nowadays, men and couples can also rent a house. However, since the renovation in the 1980s, this is no longer free.
