Visiting Dordrecht

World Heritage Site Kinderdijk

World famous are the nineteen windmills of the Unesco World Heritage Site Kinderdijk. Crown jewels that are certainly worth visiting. Mills are among the most important Dutch monuments; nowhere else in the world are there so many (historic) mills together. From Dordrecht, it is easy to reach by car or bicycle. Tip: take your bicycle on the Waterbus from Dordrecht and get off in Alblasserdam and cycle a little further through the Alblasserwaard to Kinderdijk.

Walk, cycle or sail past the photogenic mills, visit the visitor mills, the Wisboom pumping station or the auxiliary pumping station De Fabriek.

Start your visit at the Visitor Centre

Coming from the dike, you walk straight into the Visitor Centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinderdijk. Here the staff will help you on your way, you can enjoy a breathtaking view or a snack and drink.

Museum mills and pumping stations

Nowhere else in the Netherlands will you find so many windmills together as in Kinderdijk. The nineteen mills have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1997. Two of the mills are open daily to the public in the main season. Each has its own unique story. With your entrance ticket you can visit them both.
The multi-screen film in the auxiliary pumping station De Fabriek takes you on a journey through the history of Kinderdijk. The Wisboom pumping station has an impressive engine room and tells you more about water management.

Two new visiting locations

There are two visiting locations to visit in Kinderdijk. The floating exhibition "Everything Has a Time" and the Bird Theater. In both visiting locations the experience of nature, water and climate is central.
On the All Has a Time ship, three short films tell a story about the Sint-Elisabeth flood, the water system of the Alblasserwaard and the challenges of climate change for the future.
In the new Bird Theater, visitors will discover the unique landscape and the special birds that have their habitat in the reservoirs, polders and mill yards of Kinderdijk. Behind the large glass, visitors can use binoculars to spot the region's most unusual birds.

Board one of the canal boats

Your entrance ticket to the Kinderdijk World Heritage Site also entitles you to board one of the canal boats. During the main season, two canal boats sail past the windmills every day and it is not possible to reserve a seat. This is an ideal time to take some photos of this unique Dutch World Heritage site. The view is phenomenal!
