Product description
The fifth volume in the series Stories of Dordrecht "1572" is about the Free States and the independence of Orange. In 1572 a special assembly took place in Dordrecht. The representatives of twelve Dutch cities, together with the Water Beggars and an emissary of Prince William of Orange, chose for William of Orange and against King Philip II of Spain. In doing so, they effectively laid the foundation for today's Netherlands. Author Joke Vente describes the run-up to the States Assembly at the Court in Dordrecht, the role of the Sea Beggars and how in 1572 Marnix van Sint Aldegonde, representing the Prince, made an urgent appeal for support to the States.
