In Bakkie Liefde, the musical theater bicycle is transformed into a cozy coffee bar, run by a cordial barista, sung by a soprano. The audience takes seats at tables, while the player of the bajan (a Russian accordion) fills the space with warm sounds. What begins as a friendly welcome, grows into a blistering bakfiets opera full of longing, misunderstandings and comfort, with beautiful arias and duets from the Italian opera repertoire of Donizetti and Verdi.
