Illustrating a Picture Book

Fri Mar 20, 2026
14:00 - 15:30

SOLD OUT – Have you always dreamed of illustrating your own children’s book? Does the sight of a beautiful box of colored pencils or markers in 50 shades make your heart race, but you don’t know where to start? This is your chance!
Irene Jelier from Sirene Illustraties will help you get started in this workshop. Inspired by the exhibition “I See, I See—A World Full of Art,” you’ll get to work on your own drawing. You’ll use the materials available at the craft table: paper and (colored) pencils. She’ll walk you through the basics of drawing and give you helpful tips to bring your designs to life. Before you know it, you’ll be illustrating your own stories, recipe book, or birth announcement!Illustration as ArtWho isn’t familiar with the famous drawings by Fiep Westendorp or Quentin Blake? Good illustrations carry a story and spark the imagination. They invite you to use your own imagination and leave room for further interpretation. Everyone has their own style and favorite technique. They’re more than just cute pictures in a picture book—just think of the meticulous world of Charlotte Dematons or the dreamy illustrations of Marije Tolman.
Sirene Illustrations: Irene Jelier, from Dordrecht, graduated from art school and works as a freelance illustrator and workshop leader. She especially loves chubby, funny animals that have just a touch of humanity. She draws and paints not only on paper but also on walls and windows, cards, wall stickers, and fabric patterns.
