Lyric Abstraction 2

Sat Mar 23, 2024 - Sun Apr 28, 2024

If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there.

This quote by the English deacon, mathematician and writer of children's books Lewis Carroll could be the starting point of the exhibition 'Lyrical abstraction' in Drawing Society Pictura. It indicates that the work of art as a final goal, does not necessarily have to be the result of a logical train of thought, but is the instinctive representation of what happens to the creator. Herein lies a difference between lyrical and geometric abstraction in which the rational exponent is strongly present.

This means that the lyric artist relies on his inspiration (inspiration, creative thought, subject, theme or influence) and uses his optimal freedom of action. And also that he gives opportunities to the uncertain, to chance and to intuition. Intuition not as something irrational, not a "sixth sense," but as a feeling based on years of experience. Those who act intuitively do instinctively what comes to mind, but this is done from knowledge and experience and should not be confused with impulsiveness.

The four exhibitors share the feel-good approach but have their own sources of inspiration.

  • Ron Gennisse, lithographer (lithographic printer) finds inspiration in his personal experience. In seeking and finding freedom, or in the lack thereof. The white of the paper is emphatically present with him, like the light he wants to offer the viewer;
  • Antoinette Kok derives her inspiration from music. She looks for opportunities to express music directly on paper. Her intuition, her feeling based on memory and experience, expresses itself in musical rhythmic creations;
  • Dina Vos finds her inspiration in nature. She gives form to the spiritual, the transcendent, that which transcends the senses. In her work she creates space and order for her experience of space, time and silence;
  • Jan Wagner gradually exchanged his figurative working method for a more abstract representation. In his current work that no longer has any reference to visible reality, light, color, impermanence and infinity play a role. His favorite drawing material is pastel crayon.

Pictura is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
