"Vitamin C and D as an extra supplement to healthy eating is always wise at this time of year," says the branch manager of health store Holland & Barrett. "The demand for vitamin D, to support the immune system, is always high in winter." Vitamins and supplements are only a fraction of the health specialist's offering of only natural products. Start detoxing to get rid of waste products? The colleagues at Holland & Barret are happy to offer advice.
"This can easily be done with, for example, one of the many teas or products with milk thistle in them to support the liver's cleansing action. Have a nice herbal tea to drink a little less coffee or use a natural sugar substitute instead of sugar. Or bake yourself a healthy cake with one of the many flours we sell. This is how you get one step closer and closer to a healthier lifestyle."
Ingredients Finn's delicious smoothie bowl: yogurt, strawberry, pomegranate-apple, banana, raspberries, blueberries and Mel's granola.
Mel's granola: In a bowl, mix to taste oat flakes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and chopped nuts. In a saucepan over low heat, melt 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoons agave syrup, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons water. Pour this mixture into a bowl and stir well. Spread the granola on a baking sheet (with baking paper) and bake for about 20 minutes in a preheated oven at 150 degrees. Blend the pomegranate and strawberry with the yogurt in the blender. Fill your prettiest bowl with the yogurt and garnish with the granola and fruit.
Running is excellent in one of the Dordrecht parks, National Park de Biesbosch, Nieuwe Biesbosch or go for a run in the (historic) city center. You can also go to several places for strength training. Do work-outs with your own body weight and visit one of the calisthenics locations in the Leerpark, Wantijpark, Weizigtpark or the Sterrenburgpark. In Wantijpark, the trim track with 17 machines is a nice free fitness alternative to the gym. In the playground in the Overkamppark, across the street from the Sportboulevard and the hospital, there are also some calisthenics machines with which you can do fine exercises.
While you're there: also take a walk through the beautiful Dubbelmonde Park next door. Who knows, you might even come across the Scottish Highlanders. After all, a walk also gives you a lot of energy.
