1. Bluebirds in the Backyard
The first special place is a unique concept in a beautiful monument: Bluebirds in the Backyard. This shop and catering establishment in one is located on the Wijnstraat. You come here to relax, to eat and drink, to shop, to let your children play, to have a meeting, to celebrate a party, to get married, to wander around in the monument over two floors and so much more.
Come enjoy food and drinks in a casual atmosphere in the restaurant/lunchroom. Enjoy all-day breakfast, lunch, high teas, and sweets combined with a delicious beverage menu. Extra fun: dishes are served with as many sustainable, local and organic ingredients as possible.
2. Harvest Park
The next special place is one to really relax in: the Oogstpark. Surprisingly beautiful every season because of everything that grows and blossoms in the park. In the summer, you can even pick your own bouquet of flowers in the picking garden (tip!) and in the autumn, apples, nuts or berries. Take a break at the restaurant's terrace or bring your own food and enjoy it on one of the many picnic benches in the park.
The restaurant serves a small menu based on the harvest. On the chalkboards you can read the dishes that will be served that day. You can also buy harvest delicacies such as syrups, oils, herbal salts and sugars made from the surplus of the harvest. Want more to take home? 3. Meadowlark
At this idyllic location in the Biesbosch, where the old captain of the ferry used to live, you can enjoy the most delicious fresh vegetarian dishes. The cosy living room café has cosy seating areas inside and a lovely garden with beautiful flowers by the river outside. It is a popular spot for cyclists and walkers. 4. Villa Augustus
Villa Augustus is a unique place that you should not miss! It is a hotel and restaurant, in the middle of a vegetable garden. The facilities are located in special buildings, so you can sleep in the Water Tower, garden rooms or floating rooms. Extra fun: no two rooms are the same, so it's always special! The restaurant is located in the former pump building. You can always find the most delicious dishes here, fresh and often from their own harvest. In the large garden you can wander between the vegetable garden, Italian garden and orchard. Fun fact: the garden inspires the kitchen and vice versa. To take some of this special place home, you have to go to the market. Here, you can buy the tastiest fresh produce, books, unique interior items, art objects and much more.
5. Smallest house
This house at Voorstraat 265 is the narrowest house in Dordrecht. The house is only 280 centimetres wide, making it a special place in the city. In the same street is its successor: the house on the Voorstraat 113 is eight centimetres wider. You would think that a narrow house would not be so conspicuous, but precisely because of the contrast with the large white houses next door, this (slightly less) hidden gem stands out.
