With remote control of bridges via cameras, Dordrecht's bridge keepers' houses stood lonely. Since 2018, the national Stichting Brugwachtershuisjes has changed that with an art route and, since 2022, with new functions such as exhibition spaces, graphic design studio and a tiny office. In case of emergency, a real bridge keeper still comes to operate the bridge on the spot.

The double cast-iron Swing Bridge is a national monument. The accompanying bridge keeper's house houses the project "the lonely caterpillar's quest for connection" by social worker and artist Petra Roelofs. With changing exhibitions and social activities, Petra takes visitors into a story in which the caterpillar transforms from being ONE lonely to being ONE in connection together.

This richly monumental rolling bascule bridge and bridge operator's cottage were restored in 2022. The cottage now functions as a "tiny office" with a constantly changing view of the water. Sprits Concept and Paul Suijkerbuijk (the green land) make joint use of this unique location. Paul helps government organizations solve social issues using data. These include energy transition, housing, mobility and other tasks. Sprits Concept invents and realizes experiences with impact. Projects that set something in motion and create 'collective euphoria'. An example of this is the annual light route Dwaalspoor during the Dordt December Days. The various activities of Paul and Sprits are connected in an inspiring way in the bridge keeper's house. In other words, a small house for big ideas.

This modern, round bridge keeper's house houses Studio Wouke Boog. This graphic designer has her workspace here overlooking the water. Perfect for writing, designing, painting or focused work.
This bridge keeper's house is set up as the showcase of the Inland Navigation Museum. This museum is housed on six vessels moored on the grounds of the former De Biesbosch shipyard. The push boat René Siegfried, built in 1963 at this shipyard, is the central vessel of the Binnenvaartmuseum. From this bridge keeper's house, you can see the pusher boat in the Wantij. The Inland Navigation Museum is open Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Admission is free. Tours are available from here with Ferry Service 3.
