Distilleerderij Rutte is a household name in Dordrecht. Here gins and genevers are made, still in the same way as founder Simon Rutte did in 1872. Everything is distilled here using traditional methods and the best ingredients. Thanks to Dordrecht's rich trading history, Simon was able to obtain exotic spices and fruits at the time. The drinks became so popular that he expanded his family's café into a liquor store. This is now home to Rutte's store, where products from the distillery are for sale. Above the distillery is now a tasting room where you can taste the gins and genevers for yourself.
What should not be missed during your weekend getaway is a visit to the Grote Kerk, also known as the Church of Our Lady. The origins of Dordrecht's most important monument lie in the 11th century. Both the outside and the inside are worth admiring. If you look closely, the tower is quite crooked. It was actually supposed to be 108 meters with a spire, but due to subsidence the tower did not exceed 65 meters. Nevertheless, climbing the 275 steps is really worth it: the reward is a magnificent view of the city.
National Park de Biesbosch offers a unique nature experience as one of the few freshwater tidal areas in Europe. This adventurous maze of rivers, water basins and willow forests is located 5 km from the centre of Dordrecht. The Nieuwe Merwede river crosses the nature reserve, so that part of the national park lies on the Eiland van Dordrecht and part in Noord-Brabant. Discover this rugged nature by whisper boat, canoe, sup or on foot. Spot the many birds, fish and maybe even a beaver!
